Getting around in Venice

Of course, THE way to get around in Venice is by boat. There are several kinds:

Vaporetto : The busiest lines are numbers 1 and 82 which travel up and down the grand canal. The vaporetti belong to the ACTV (Azienda del Consorzio Trasporti Veneziano).

traghetto

The ACTV can also take you to the islands of Giudecca, San Giorgio, Lido, Murano, Burano and torcello.

Motoscafo : It resembles the Vaporetto, but doesn't operate in the same manner. The Motoscafo on Morano can drop you off at different parts of the island.

Traghetto: These large public gondolas allow you to travel from one bank of the grand canal to the other. They may not have the charm of the traditional gondolas, but they are much more affordable.

Boat taxis: luxurious little boats (just like in the movies!), but not recommended if you're on a tight budget.

Gondolas: 11 meters long and 1.5 meters wide, the gondolas are all black, some are decorated with gold, and all have very comfortable cushions!

     Boat passes :

24 hours: 18000 Lira per person
72 hours: 35000 Lira per person
1 week: 60000 Lira per person

You can find out more at the boat stops near the grand canal just across from the train station.

gondoleThe gondolas don't all follow the same route (fortunately!). Don't be afraid to ask the gondolier. Gondola rides are expensive: 150,000 Lira for two people for a 45 minute ride.

The best and cheapest way to get around Venice is on foot. Get yourself a map of town at the tourist office in the train station and get out your walking shoes to discover the splendors of Venice.

From the largest monument to the tiniest little street, it's as if you were in a giant labyrinth.

And how delicious it is to wander through this labyrinth! Besides, you can't get completely lost. If you just look up you'll see the signs that point you in the direction of the most popular monuments in Venice.
