Documents of the Jewish people residing in Lisbon dates back to 482 CE. However, historians and archeologists attest to a Jewish presence in Portugal that pre-dates Roman colonization. Lisbon's distinctive sub-group of Sephardi Jews have unique rituals based on pre-expulsion Spain and Moroccan origins, which have survived over hundreds of years in secret. At times, Lisbon's Jews held social and political ranks with the favor of kings, and conciliatory relations between Muslims and Christians alike. These periods were equally marked by inquisitions, forced baptisms and brutal massacres. During the second world war Jews were reluctantly accepted as refugees, and in 1987 the President of Portugal asked forgiveness to the Jewish communities of Portuguese for all of their past persecutions.

This tour is led by the only tour guide in Portugal who is Jewish. There are only about 900 Jews left in Portugal today, and our guide is the most requested. Don't miss out!
